Five facts about the Bassa language
Bassa is a Niger-Congo Kru language with an estimated 653,730 speakers in the world.
It is spoken mainly in Liberia and in the western region of Sierra Leone.
It has a unique alphabet, named Vah, that consists of five different tones marked using a system of dots and lines inside the vowel letters. However, this alphabet fell out of use in the 19th century.
Bassa was originally written in boustrophedon style (from right to left, and from left to right in alternate lines). The current writing direction of left to right started in the 1960s.
The Bassa language spoken by the Bassa people in Liberia is different from Basaa (also spelled Bassa or Basa) spoken by the Bassa people in Cameroon.
